about brainfreeze

Brainfreeze closed for business on February 12, 2018. The owner, Stewart Copeland, moved to Rhode Island to pursue his MFA at RISD.

Brainfreeze was a curated collection of underground, alternative, and small press comics & zines. The books came from around the world and range from handmade one-of-a-kind objects of art to masterfully reissued collections from renowned alternative publishers. Every book at Brainfreeze is carefully selected to represent the wide-spectrum of creators, styles, and stories you can only find in sequential art.

Brainfreeze began as a small 4x4 shelf in the corner of The Groove record store in East Nashville. Since it’s opening in July of 2014, it has grown into a series of six freestanding shelves with over a 1,000 different items, a coin operated sticker machine, a poster and print rack, and a table of patches, pins, and other unique handcrafted merchandise. We organize art openings and host book releases as well as providing local artists and publishers with a place to sell their work. We were recognized by the Nashville Scene as a “Best Of Nashville” small business and continue to garner recognition as a respected destination for fans of art, comics, and zines.

In January of 2017 Brainfreeze moved into GIFT HORSE. It closed in 2018.

Settled in a corner of The Groove, you’ll find one of the best collections of indie comics, art books and zines within 300 miles. Brainfreeze, operated by Bully drummer Stewart Copeland, is an ambitious attempt to bring Nashville a truly independent, truly experimental selection of comic books. You won’t find the latest Spider-Man adventure here, but you will find books by acclaimed creators like Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes and Chris Ware — along with limited-run books by the great indie comic creators of tomorrow.
